Dr. Sharkey
Dr. Heather Sharkey began her medical career practicing on her sister with a
Fisher Price medical kit. Dr. Sharkey graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry where she won a Howard Hughes fellowship award to perform research in cell death and degeneration on C. Elegans under the mentorship of Dr. Dewey Royal in Dr. Monica Driscoll's lab. She attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and completed her Family Medicine residency and NMM/OMM plus one residency at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Dr. Sharkey is board certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. After teaching part time at UNECOM from 2012-2023, she retired from primary care to teach full time at UNECOM as an Assistant Clinical Professor and is the Clinical Skills Content Lead for 1st year medical students. She continues to see patients as an NMM/OMM specialist in her private practice.
While a senior resident, she was recognized by Tufts University for teaching excellence in pediatrics. She was awarded as the Young Osteopathic Physician of the Year in 2013 by the Maine Osteopathic Association. She was recognized as a Times Record "Best of the Midcoast" Physician in 2022.
Dr. Sharkey began studying Biodynamic/Traditional Osteopathy with Dr. Jealous in New Hampshire in 2008 and continued attending his courses at least yearly in Oregon until he passed in 2021. She has completed Phases I-X and Peds Phases I, II, and III. She is currently studying with Dr. Donald Hankinson and Dr. Gregory Yesensky.
