Dr. Sharkey
Dr. Heather Sharkey began her medical career practicing on her sister with a Fisher Price medical kit. Dr. Sharkey graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry where she won a Howard Hughes fellowship award to perform research in cell death and degeneration on C. Elegans under the mentorship of Dr. Dewey Royal in Dr. Monica Driscoll's lab. She attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and completed her Family Medicine residency and NMM/OMM plus one residency at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. While a senior resident, she was recognized by Tufts University for teaching excellence in pediatrics. Dr. Sharkey is board certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.
She was awarded the Young Osteopathic Physician of the Year Award in 2013 by the Maine Osteopathic Association. She was recognized as a Times Record "Best of the Midcoast" Physician in 2022. Dr. Sharkey began studying Biodynamic/Traditional Osteopathy with Dr. Jealous in New Hampshire in 2008 and continued attending his courses at least yearly in Oregon until he passed in 2021. She has completed Phases I-IX and Peds Phases I, II, and III. She is currently studying with Dr. Donald Hankinson and Gregory Yesensky. She is on faculty for Biobasics New Hampshire classes. She teaches Osteopathic Clinical Skills at UNECOM since 2012. Her hobbies include being curious about lots of things, reading, writing, hiking, gardening, cooking, listening to the Portland Symphony Orchestra, watching the Maine State Music Theater, enjoying the natural world, and spending time with friends and family.
